Yesterday I volunteered for the CERT training in the Education building on campus. The simulation was an active shooter in the building... looking for the Dean. He shot off 22 rounds of a .38 on all 4 floors. It was interesting to hear the difference when he was on the opposite end of the building from where I was, on the 2nd floor stairwell, the shot just sounded like a book dropping or someone shaking a heavy mat.
Most people in the building barricaded themselves in locked offices, a few tried to evacuate the building. We met afterward to debrief. The whole exercise took 8 mins. After the first 2 mins, a USU police officer took out the perp... but for the exercise, he kept going so we could hear it on every floor.
The best way to prepare for emergencies, is to practice and keep a cool head.
